About Pitch Black Illustration Rares

What is an Illustration Rare?

Illustration Rares (IRs, often called art rares) are secret rares numbered above Pitch Black's 84-card main set. Each shows an ordinary Pokémon — not an ex — in full artwork that runs to the card's edges, often in a style quite different from the main set. You can tell one by the single gold star in its rarity symbol; two gold stars means a Special Illustration Rare.

IRs are the most affordable way into a set's artwork cards, and many collectors build the full run in a binder. Our Pitch Black IRs include Slowbro 090/084, Goldeen 087/084 and Dhelmise 091/084. The Pokémon Company does not publish official pull rates.

Delivery and more Pitch Black cards

Singles are sold raw and ungraded, every card is condition-checked before it ships, and they go anywhere in the UK for a flat £1.75, however many cards are in your order. See the full Pitch Black card list, or the set's Pitch Black chase cards and Special Illustration Rares; every IR across sets is in Illustration Rare Pokémon cards.

Frequently asked questions

How many Illustration Rares are in Pitch Black?

We list 11 Illustration Rares from Pitch Black. They are secret rares, numbered above the 84-card main set, and each is a single listing priced and stocked on its own.

What is the most valuable Pitch Black Illustration Rare?

Of the IRs we list, the dearest is Slowbro 090/084 at £13 (out of stock when checked). Prices checked 8 October 2026; each card's page shows the live price.

Is an Illustration Rare the same as a full art card?

Not quite. Ultra Rare full art cards show a Pokémon ex or Trainer on a textured, mostly single-colour background, while Illustration Rares show an ordinary Pokémon in a full painted scene. The rarity symbol settles it: one gold star for an Illustration Rare, two silver stars for an Ultra Rare.
