How to play the One Piece Card Game: a beginner’s guide

Iconic Trading Cards

One Piece Card Game

In the One Piece Card Game, each player has a Leader, a 50-card deck and 10 DON!! cards. Each turn you add DON!! and spend it to play Characters and Events, then attack your opponent's Leader. Every hit takes one of their Life cards. Take their last Life card, then land one more hit, and you win.

Key facts

  • Deck: 1 Leader, exactly 50 cards (up to 4 copies of each card number), and a 10-card DON!! deck.
  • Every card in your deck must share a colour with your Leader. There are six colours: red, green, blue, purple, black and yellow.
  • Start with 5 cards in hand (one redraw allowed) and Life cards equal to your Leader's Life value.
  • Add 2 DON!! each turn (1 on the first player's first turn); rest DON!! to pay costs, or attach it for +1000 power.
  • Nobody attacks on their own first turn. The attacker wins ties.
  • Win by hitting a Leader that has no Life left, or when your opponent's deck runs out.

These rules follow Bandai's official comprehensive rules (version 1.2.1, August 2026). If you are wondering which sets exist and whether to buy English or Japanese, read our One Piece Card Game UK guide first.

What do you need to play?

Each player needs a deck built around one Leader card, plus a separate stack of ten DON!! cards. The easiest way to start is two ready-made starter decks, one each, which include a Leader and DON!! cards. After that, booster packs add new cards to improve your deck. You will also want sleeves and something to track damage, although the game needs very little else.

The card types

  • Leader: starts face up on the table. It sets your deck's colours, has a power value and a Life value, and often an ability that shapes your strategy. It can attack every turn.
  • Characters: the crew you play to the board. Each has a cost, a power value and often a Counter value. You can have up to five Characters on the field.
  • Events: one-off effects that are played and then trashed. Some have a [Counter] timing and can be played during your opponent's attack.
  • Stages: locations or ships that stay on the field and give ongoing effects.
  • DON!!: the resource cards, kept in their own deck.

Setting up

  1. Place your Leader face up and your DON!! deck to one side.
  2. Shuffle your 50-card deck and draw five cards. Each player may redraw once: return the whole hand, shuffle and draw five again.
  3. Take cards from the top of your deck equal to your Leader's Life value and place them face down, without looking, as your Life cards.
  4. Decide who goes first.

How a turn works

  1. Refresh: any DON!! attached to your cards returns to your cost area, and all your rested cards become active (upright) again.
  2. Draw: draw one card. The first player skips this on their very first turn.
  3. DON!!: add two DON!! from your DON!! deck to your cost area. The first player adds only one on their first turn.
  4. Main: play Characters, Events and Stages by resting DON!! equal to their cost, use abilities, attach DON!! to your Leader or Characters, and attack.
  5. End: end-of-turn effects happen and play passes to your opponent.

Because DON!! grows by itself each turn, you never have to put resource cards in your deck, and you never miss a turn because you drew the wrong cards. That is one reason the game is easy to learn.

Attaching DON!!

Instead of spending DON!!, you can attach it to your Leader or a Character during your Main phase. Each attached DON!! gives +1000 power during your turn only. Many cards also have [DON!! x1] or [DON!! x2] abilities that switch on when enough DON!! is attached. Deciding whether to spend DON!! on new cards or attach it to push an attack through is the main decision of the game.

Attacking

To attack, rest (turn sideways) your active Leader or a Character that has been in play since the start of the turn (a Character with [Rush] can attack the turn it is played). You can attack your opponent's Leader, or one of their Characters that is rested. Active, upright Characters cannot be attacked. Remember: neither player can attack on their own first turn.

Each attack then goes through three steps:

  1. Block: the defender may rest one Character with the [Blocker] keyword to make it the new target.
  2. Counter: the defender may trash Character cards from their hand to add their Counter value (usually +1000 or +2000) to the defending card for this battle, or pay for and play [Counter] Events.
  3. Damage: compare power. If the attacker's power is equal to or higher than the defender's, the attack succeeds. The attacker wins ties.

A Character that loses a battle is K.O.'d and goes to the trash. A Leader that loses a battle takes a point of damage.

Life cards and Triggers

When your Leader takes damage, you take the top card of your Life and put it into your hand. Losing Life hurts, but it also gives you cards, including Counter cards to defend with, so the game swings back and forth. If that Life card has a [Trigger] effect, you may reveal it and use the effect instead, which can turn an attack around.

How do you win?

You win when your opponent's Leader takes damage while they have no Life cards left. In other words: take all their Life, then land one more successful hit. A player also loses if their deck runs out of cards, so very long games can end that way.

Beginner tips

  • Pick a Leader you like. Your Leader decides your colours and how your deck plays, so it is the first choice to make.
  • Keep Counter cards in hand. A hand full of +1000 and +2000 Counters is what stops your Leader being hit.
  • Attack rested Characters. Characters that attacked on your opponent's turn are left rested and can be knocked out on yours.
  • Do not rush to spend every DON!!. Sometimes attaching two DON!! to your Leader wins more than playing another Character.

Where to start

Two starter decks, or two friends with a deck each, is the best first step. After that, booster packs add the cards that improve your deck. We stock English One Piece booster packs and boxes, including OP-17: The World's Strongest Warriors, released on 28 August 2026. The next main set, OP-18: The Dominance of God, is due on 20 November 2026. Browse the full One Piece Card Game range or single One Piece packs.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are in a One Piece Card Game deck?

A deck is one Leader card plus exactly 50 cards in the main deck, and a separate 10-card DON!! deck. You can include up to four copies of any card number, and every card in the main deck must share a colour with your Leader.

How do you win the One Piece Card Game?

Reduce your opponent’s Life to zero and then land one more successful attack on their Leader. You also win if your opponent has no cards left in their deck. Life cards equal your Leader’s Life value and are set aside face down at the start of the game.

What are DON!! cards?

DON!! cards are the game’s resource. You add two from your DON!! deck each turn (one on the first player’s first turn) and rest them to pay for cards. You can also attach them to your Leader or Characters, giving +1000 power each during your turn.

Can you attack on your first turn?

No. Neither player can attack on their own first turn. The first player also skips their first draw and only adds one DON!! card on their first turn, which balances the advantage of going first.

Is the One Piece Card Game good for beginners?

Yes. There is no separate resource card in the deck, because DON!! grows automatically each turn, and the Leader decides your colours and strategy. Most people pick it up in two or three games, and starter decks let two players start straight away.
