A booster box — a display in most non-Pokémon games — is a full sealed case of booster packs from a single set. It is almost always the cheapest way to buy packs, and it is the format most collectors choose when they want a real shot at the chase cards in a set.

English Pokémon booster boxes have most recently shipped as 36-pack displays, while Japanese boxes run to a different pack count and card-per-pack structure entirely — Japanese packs are smaller but the boxes are usually considerably cheaper, which is why so many collectors open Japanese and collect English.

Choosing between them

Buying a sealed box also gives you the option most collectors care about — you can open it, or you can leave it sealed. Sealed boxes from popular sets have historically held their value better than the loose packs from the same print run, which is why so many people buy two.
